The Fittonia 'Pink' (Fittonia albivenis), commonly known as Nerve Plant, is a truly eye-catching spreading evergreen perennial. Its deep-green leaves are intricately patterned with a stunning network of vibrant pink veins, creating a dramatic and delicate contrast. While Nerve Plants come in various vein colors, the 'Pink' variety offers a cheerful and bright splash of color. This charming plant has a low-growing, spreading habit, making it perfect for terrariums, small pots, or as a vibrant groundcover in humid environments. Although its primary appeal is its exquisite foliage, tiny, inconspicuous white to off-white flowers may occasionally appear where the stem splits into leaves. Fittonias are known for being quite expressive, often "fainting" dramatically when thirsty, but quickly perking up after a good drink!
Important Note
Fittonia 'Pink' is non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a wonderful and safe choice for homes with curious cats, dogs, or children.
Key Features
- Vibrant Pink Veining: Features stunning, intricate pink veins against deep green leaves, creating a bold visual pop.
- Delicate & Decorative Foliage: The finely patterned leaves add a unique texture and artistry to any plant collection.
- Compact & Spreading Habit: Ideal for terrariums, small containers, or as a colorful groundcover due to its low, trailing growth.
- Evergreen Perennial: Provides continuous vibrant color and greenery year-round.
- Pet-Friendly Plant: A safe choice for households with pets or children, offering peace of mind.
Care Tips
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves. Too little light can cause the vibrant vein colors to fade.
- Water: Requires consistent moisture. Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water thoroughly when the top half-inch to inch of soil feels slightly dry. Fittonias are famous for "fainting" (wilting dramatically) when thirsty, which is your cue to water immediately. They typically bounce back quickly!
- Humidity: Demands high humidity to thrive. Mist daily, place it in a terrarium or cloche, use a pebble tray, or place it near a humidifier. Low humidity can lead to crispy leaf edges.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix that is rich in organic matter. A standard indoor potting mix with added peat or coco coir works well.
- Feeding: Fertilize sparingly, once every 2-4 weeks during the spring and summer growing seasons, using a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.
- Temperature: Prefers warm, consistent temperatures between 18-24°C (65-75°F). Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
- Pruning: Pinch back leggy stems to encourage a bushier, more compact growth habit and maintain its desirable shape.
